Perigee Lamp

A Collaboration with Metalworker and sculptor Oliver Tanner

Perigee: the point at which two orbiting objects are at their closest. An exploration into the intersection of two crafts.

Two thin, doubly-curved crescent profiles in timber and bronze follow two sweeps of offset circles sharing a central radial point appearing to clasp each other with opposing crescent shapes. The bronze ring diffuses and reflects the LED light mounted to the timber.

To achieve the double curvature of the shape, salvaged African Danta has been stack laminated into a ring, then paper-glued to a sacrificial backing plate. This was then turned and hand carved. Tanner used a 3D model of the ring to 3D print an offset of the timber form. The print was used to sand-cast the ring in Bronze, before being hand hammered to create the faceted surface designed to both diffuse the light and trace the work of the hand as a textural element of the piece.
